"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will." (NIV) Why would we want a transformed mind? Part of the answer is - so that we can put things to the test. When we go shopping we put things to the test to see if its a counterfeit or genuine article. Is the colour, size, weight correct, does it feel right, is the price much to cheap? We have a mental image of how things should be, which allows us to spot a fake. God wants us to know his will, so that we can test what people say and know whether it's right or not.
Another reason to have a transformed mind, is so that we do not conform to 'the pattern of this world'. We should not try to emulate the social conventions of this world. We need to keep our thought on better things as shown in the next verse.
"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent
or praiseworthy-think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me-put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." (NIV) A transformed mind doesn't just happen. We have to do our part by keeping our thoughts on righteous things - thankfully the Holy Spirit is there to help us.
2 Corinthians 3:18
"And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are beingtransformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit." (NRSV) Verses 17 and 18 are given a different slant in the Message Bible "Whenever, though, they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to-face! They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfiguredmuch like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him." (MSG)
